My top ten films of 2016

Welcome back, folks! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. Now is the time to look back over the year in film releases and pick my favourites. These are restricted to films released in the U.K. in 2016 – so it may include films I actually saw in late 2015 and although I desperately wanted to put La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion and Free Fire on this list, they aren’t out until 2017, so unfortunately they don’t make the cut.

Room: Film Review

I loved Room by Emma Donoghue – the novel was compelling, offered a fresh perspective and packed an emotional punch – so I was totally worried about the film adaptation. Luckily, Donoghue herself wrote the script and keeps everything I love about the book and the material is considerably elevated by two amazing performances from Brie Larson and Canadian youngster Jacob Tremblay.

The 2016 BAFTA Rising Star winner is so hard to pick

As the only BAFTA category open to public vote, I always feel like it is my duty as a U.K. fan film to vote for the Rising Star Award and I have done in recent years, but my choice has never scooped the award (not even once!) So perhaps I shouldn’t and then my favourite would win.
