Retaliation: Film Review

The release of Retaliation – also known as Romans – has been a long time coming. Orlando Bloom filmed this hard-hitting drama in late 2015 and it had its premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2017, and it has somehow taken four years to get a UK release.

Bloom stars as Malky, who was sexually abused by his priest when he was only 12 years old and is haunted by his past, with him being a deeply troubled and tormented man who struggles to control his rage and anger or have a committed, monogamous relationship with Emma (Janet Montgomery) and is physically violent towards himself and others. The horrors of his past come to the forefront more than ever as Malky and his demolition team are tasked with knocking down the church he attended as a child.

You need to make sure you’re in the right mindset to watch Retaliation because it really is a depressing, gruelling, and harrowing watch. There is certain imagery – particularly of Malky punishing himself physically – that made me wince in horror and revulsion. The deeply unpleasant images are seared into my brain and I’d rather not see them again.

This is easily Bloom’s career-best performance and it is so different from what we usually see from him, which I guess was part of the allure of the role, to prove he can do this kind of sombre, bleak drama. He throws his all into the challenging part and does well at physically embodying a cold, hard man with pent-up rage and long-nurtured resentment and a massive chip on his shoulder, but I thought his range was limited on the emotional side. He lacked the amount of nuance the role required.

The final scenes of Retaliation (I prefer the title Romans btw) should have delivered a devastating gut-punch and could have done so in much more capable hands. They are still shocking and gripping but because Bloom doesn’t have the range to do the role justice and it was so hard to connect with such a horrible person, it didn’t have the emotional impact it could have done.

Retaliation is a difficult, distressing film to watch. Consider yourself warned!

Available on digital platforms from Friday 26th March

Theatre Review: Orlando Bloom is the weakest link in Killer Joe

Orlando Bloom was one of the main reasons I booked tickets to see Killer Joe – besides really liking the Matthew McConaughey-starring film – but his performance was the one I ended up watching the least because he was easily outshone by everyone else.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

When I heard there was going to be another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I couldn’t help but groan because I felt the franchise was done – as much as I loved the first two, the last two (especially the fourth) weren’t so good and I expected this, also known as Salazar’s Revenge, to be SO bad, so imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to discover that is a welcome return to form for the franchise.

Unlocked: Film Review

Noomi Rapace is a brilliant actress who can handle emotional, character-driven stuff as well as kick-ass action sequences so it is a shame she isn’t given more great roles. Unlocked is a step in the right direction but she still deserves more.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Film Review

I will be the first to say that these are not my type of films. I watch them because I should rather than because I am genuinely excited for them. To prove my point: I watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy for the first time this year, and I only began The Hobbit prequels this week. However, I am surprised by how much I like them.

It picks up where Desolation of Smaug left off: the dragon has broken out of the Lonely Mountain and is on its way to destroy Laketown. Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) has reclaimed his kingdom but he now has dragon sickness – his greed over the gold has made him crazy and he is on the verge of killing members of the Company to locate the Arkenstone. That is not their only problem – both the people of Laketown (lead by Bard, played by Luke Evans) and the Woodland Elves (lead by Thranduil, played by Lee Pace) want their share of the riches inside the mountain and Oakenshield refuses to let a single gold coin leave this kingdom. War is imminent, and an army of Orcs are heading to Erebor to reclaim the mountain for themselves.

Big Pics: Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez

Anne Hathaway

Anne seems like one of the nicest celebrities! You can see her hanging out with other actresses and she just seems so sweet and like she is having so much fun. Here she is with Jessica Chastain and below with Claire Danes and then Les Mis co-star Amanda Seyfried.

Ben Affleck

Well, we knew Ben would be happy with his award for best director but this picture says it all.

Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy

Here is the moment when J.Lo’s ex meets her new boyfriend, Caspar Smart. It doesn’t seem too awkward.

Don Cheadle & Maria Menounos

Maria shared this picture on her WhoSay account and she is just chilling with a beer while laying on Don! As you do!

Miranda Kerr

Miranda and husband Orlando Bloom looked so in love on the red carpet and they were side-by-side most of the night. It is great to see that the break-up rumours are just rumours. It was also Orlando’s birthday and he was surprised by a cake on their table. They are such a gorgeous couple too- you just want to hate them!

Big Pics: Sofia Vergara, Orlando Bloom & Michelle Williams

Sofia Vergara

Here’s the moment when Sofia had a nip slip when her fiance Nick had an altercation in a club on New Year’s. This picture surfaced later in the week- Sofia was caught in the scuffle and ended up on the floor. To be fair, she wasn’t exactly covering her breasts much to begin with…just take a look below.

Orlando Bloom & Miranda Kerr

Orlando and wife Miranda put paid to separation rumours by showing their affection in public. However, I’m not convinced because they look very awkward and it doesn’t look genuine.

Jason Segel & Michelle Williams

These are just ANOTHER couple who have gone on holiday over new year! Still jealous! The pair were in Cancun, Mexico and Michelle covered up her fair skin with a shirt and hat. They were also seen with actress Busy Phillips, complete with baby bump.

AnnaSophia Robb

Robb channels 60s model Twiggy in her shoot for Teen Vogue. She is promoting her new TV show, The Carrie Diaries, which premieres next Monday (14th January)- I cannot wait! She will be playing the lead role of Carrie Bradshaw, which are certainly big shoes to fill.

During the interview, Robb spoke about her reluctance to do TV:  “When I was younger, I didn’t want to be on TV. I made a conscious decision to stay away from Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel—not that they’re not great companies, but because I wanted to play different kinds of roles and have the freedom to choose my projects.

“So when my agent called about this job, I said no way. TV was too much of a commitment. I realized it was actually a really strong story. It had a lot of heart and integrity, and Carrie seems like a character that I can grow with.”

Big Pics: Anne Hathaway, Julianne Hough & Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom

We hardly ever see Orlando with his son so it’s nice to see him taking Flynn for a walk in Runyon Canyon. The actor is still surrounded by rumours that his marriage to model Miranda Kerr is on the rocks after she posted a picture of her left hand without her wedding ring.

Julianne Hough

How hot does she look on the cover of Cosmo?! She also revealed some dark tales of her past- saying that she was abused while at a dance school in London. She wouldn’t reveal any specifics but she would say, “While I was in London, I was abused, mentally, physically, everything.” That’s so sad.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence seems to be doing photo shoots all over the place at the moment! This sexy shoot was shot by Ellen Von Unworth for Vanity Fair. I think she looks so pretty on the cover below.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway puckers up to husband Adam Shulman during their break to Switzerland over the new year. The pair were holidaying at a ski resort with retired fashion designer Valentino, who created her wedding dress.

Big Pics: Kim & Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Orlando & Gaga

1. Look how adorable Orlando’s son Flynn is! This is the first time I’ve seen them out and about in full view and it makes my heart melt! Orlando looks like such a great dad. I reckon eighteen-month-old Flynn looks more like his mum, Victoria’s Secret model, Miranda Kerr. Orlando and Flynn were pictured arriving at JFK airport in New York on Friday.

2. Kim Kardashian and Beyonce seem like the best of buds in these pictures taken at a Watch The Throne gig in Birmingham. The pair were stood together in the VIP section and actually look really chummy which hits back at sources saying they dislike each other. It’s helpful they get along considering their partners are best friends and currently touring together. It would certainly make things difficult/awkward if they didn’t. Kim is dating Kanye West and Beyonce has been married to Jay-Z since 2008.

3. Check out the outfit that Lady Gaga decided to go sightseeing in! You would think that after doing four shows in her insane stage costumes that she would prefer something more comfortable for a day off. But no, not Gaga. Check out those shoes!! Luckily, she wasn’t seeing the sights of Sydney by foot but instead had a boat tour of the Harbour. Gaga’s next stop on the Born This Way Ball tour is Melbourne where she will play five shows.

4. All together now…AWWWW! This is the sweetest picture ever and it shows just how cute engaged couple Liam Hemsowrth and Miley Cyrus are together. They look like a little family with Miley’s dog Ziggy. This picture put the biggest smile on my face!
