Alice Through the Looking Glass: Film Review

alice2

My reaction to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland was distinctly average – it was ‘meh’, alright but forgettable – so I wasn’t massively looking forward to this sequel, which has taken a big six-year gap and switched directors from Tim Burton to James Bobin. The box office takings were huge, but this sequel still feels unwarranted.

Tonight I went down to the London premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass, and much like the press conference on Sunday, it starred Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Mia Wasikowska, director James Bobin and producer Tim Burton. They were also joined by minor cast members Ed Speleers and Andrew Scott.

Crimson Peak: Film Review

oct1

I am not a big fan of horror movies, nor do I see everyone’s fascination with Guillermo del Toro. But I love Mia Wasikowksa, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain individually so having them all in Crimson Peak was just a dream for me, not to mention them being dressed in the most stunning costumes. Madame Bovary: LFF Film Review

bov1

As a huge fan of Mia Wasikowska, I simply had to go and see Madame Bovary at the London Film Festival. She is superb in it, like the rest of the cast, in this adaptation of Flaubert’s classic novel.

Wasikowska stars as Emma Bovary, a woman who has just married a small-town doctor and moved to a rural village in 19th Century France. She soon becomes disappointed in her life and embarks on affairs to advance her social status. She also buys expensive goods beyond her means and her lavish lifestyle soon brings the Bovarys into debt which they cannot repay.

Maps to the Stars: Film Review

Bailey's Quest-840.cr2

This is dark, twisted, extreme but amazing. I really enjoyed this for its well-observed, cutting commentary on the Hollywood industry and how it can mess up a person. It also very honest and witty. There are plenty more superlatives but I think the one that sums it up the best is: genius.

Films For September

As the new month starts, I look at the releases I’m most excited for:

Sex Tape

This looks hilarious. Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel play a couple who decide to film themselves having sex and the tape gets accidentally uploaded onto the Internet and sent to their friends. I can see myself laughing out loud at this. Released: 3rd September
