Velvet Buzzsaw: Film Review

I didn’t have much clue about Velvet Buzzsaw except that it starred Jake Gyllenhaal, which was frankly enough for me – I’ll watch anything with him in. But then I learned that he was teaming up with his Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy again and playing an art critic with epic glasses and I was sold. I hardly ever watch Netflix films on the weekend they come out but I couldn’t resist and I’m glad I checked it out.

Wildlife: Film Review

I loved Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan‘s previous joint effort Ruby Sparks so I had high hopes for Wildlife, which is Dano’s directorial debut starring Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal. It is an assured debut which looked beautiful and had some great ideas, but it was a bit too slow for my tastes.

The 2017 Cannes Film Festival kicked off yesterday, and as always I’m filled with envy that I’m not there, watching the stars hit the red carpet and seeing the premiere of all these potentially amazing films. For the next ten days, there will be plenty of screenings but there are just a handful that I’m really excited about. Here they are:

Life (2017): Film Review

When Life was first announced, I groaned because the sci-fi genre has been done to death recently and I didn’t think we needed a new space movie. It isn’t original by any means but it is still a very enjoyable and seriously intense thriller.
