Ocean’s 8: Film Review

Following the critical mauling the all-female Ghostbusters reboot got (although I personally enjoyed it), I really wanted to like Ocean’s 8, not just because of what it represented for female-led blockbusters, but because I love the ensemble cast and the idea of a female heist comedy. Sadly, it didn’t quite come through.

Alice Through the Looking Glass: Film Review

alice2

My reaction to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland was distinctly average – it was ‘meh’, alright but forgettable – so I wasn’t massively looking forward to this sequel, which has taken a big six-year gap and switched directors from Tim Burton to James Bobin. The box office takings were huge, but this sequel still feels unwarranted.

Today the cast of Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, came to London to chat about the movie. We have (from L-R): director James Bobin, Sacha Baron Cohen, Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, and producers Suzanne Todd and Tim Burton. Phew!

Suffragette: Film Review

suff3

This is a huge part of British history and I’m completely amazed it hasn’t been covered in film before. It is incredibly important, so powerful and still very relevant so I urge everyone to watch Suffragette.

Pictures from the Cinderella Exhibition

IMG_20150325_162202

An exhibition has been launched to celebrate the upcoming U.K. release of Cinderella and it features the costumes, sets and props from the Disney reboot. It was amazing! I enjoyed it more than the movie. While I didn’t like the new adaptation (read my review), I couldn’t deny how gorgeous it looked so it was great to see everything up close.

Cinderella: Film Review

cind3

I had hoped by taking an old Disney tale and revamping it for the modern day, Cinderella would be updated and have a modern feel.  It turned out to be the opposite – this was far too old-fashioned, traditional and literally a copy of the 1950 Disney animation so it didn’t feel fresh or exciting.

Oscars 2013: Fashion Hits and Misses

As it is the Oscars, celebs go all out with the fashion which means you usually get some really, really great dresses and some truly awful ones. There were no shocks unfortunately (except that you can see Anne Hathaway’s nipples through her dress!) but the poorly dressed just didn’t compare to the others or it was simply a risky or ill-advised choice.

Here are my best and worst dressed.

HITS

Amy Adams

yes6

It is unusual for me to like something like this but I think Amy looks stunning. The Oscars are the perfect opportunity to wear huge ballgowns so Amy didn’t hold back. The bust is fitted and detailed perfectly. Love it.

Jessica Chastain

yes5

I have been loving Jessica’s award season taste- she is spot on every time. I think she has worn better gowns but I think this is simple and gorgeous.

Amanda Seyfried

yes2

I love Amanda style and this pale number is amazing- the detailing, the halterneck, the fit on the bust, all perfect.

Jennifer Garner

yes9

I love that Jennifer has picked a unique colour and it really suits her. It may look like those parts are sticking out the sides like wings but it’s actually part of the detailing at the back.

Charlize Theron

yes7

I think this gown suits Charlize perfectly. It goes so well with her funky hairdo. It is such a strong look.

Anne Hathaway

yes8

I think dress is very simple but so pretty. I love the material and just check out that necklace! I think it works because of her cropped hair. Check out the nipples too haha!

MISSES

Helena Bonham Carter

no3

This is hardly a bit surprise because Helena has always had quirky tastes. Her hair is a mess and there are too many different coloured layers to that skirt.

Kristen Stewart

no5

I really dislike this but a lot of people love it. I just don’t like the detailing and I don’t think it hangs off her properly. Plus the mermaid fin look isn’t cool.

Naomi Watts

no2

I just don’t like it, which is so disappointing as I’m usually a fan of her style picks. If the left boob was symmetrical to the right,  I may like it but I just don’t like what’s going on at the top.

Nicole Kidman

no7

This was just far too shiny so I don’t like how it looks. It looks wet!

Sandra Bullock

no6

I am not loving the bottom of the skirt- it reminds of a gypsy skirt and that’s not a red carpet look.

Halle Berry

no1

This had a futuristic vibe to it that I simply wasn’t feeling.

American Pie: Reunion

I simply cannot wait for this! I absolutely loved the first three movies (the other straight-to-DVD movies don’t count) and I’m sure this will be just as good. All the old cast are back and it is going to be sweet! It will be interesting to see how the characters have moved on in their adult life- for example, Jim (Jason Biggs) is married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and they have a two-year-old son. The film is set thirteen years after graduation so naturally the boys have drifted apart a bit but that will all change when they get together for their high school reunion. I can’t wait to hear the banter between Stifler, Jim, Oz, Finch and Kevin. American Wedding was in 2003 so I’m sure everyone will be gagging for this. I reckon it will be more of a nostalgia thing and I can’t see anybody new to the franchise being that into it. But still, I love them and I can see myself loving this too.

The Lucky One

Zac Efron bulks up to play a Marine in this movie and damn does he look good! Efron plays Logan, a Marine who finds a picture of a woman while in Iraq and believes it gives him the luck to survive out there. Once he returns from Iraq, he is intent on finding this woman so he tracks her down in a small town. Beth (Taylor Schilling) knows nothing about this picture and despite her reservations at first, a romance soon blossoms between them. This does not please her ex-husband, who does everything he can to split them up. While the plot is totally far-fetched, I want to see it because I’m intrigued to see Zac in his first proper grown-up role plus it is based on a Nicholas Sparks book, which means it will tug at the heart strings!

Silent House

Elizabeth Olsen stars in this horror as a young woman named Sarah who is terrorised in her family holiday home while preparing it for sale. She gets trapped inside the house and is unable to contact the outside world as things get increasingly strange. The trailer doesn’t reveal the full details of the story and instead builds up the atmosphere and tension, making you want to know what is happening to the girl. The film has been marketed as being shown in one sequence, meaning it is shot to look like it is happening in real time with handheld cameras and no obvious cuts. Despite the shaky camerawork, I don’t believe it is in the “found footage” style. It will be interesting to see how that works because you won’t be able to show any sort of back story. I’m very intrigued.

Dark Shadows

Johnny Depp stars with an all-star cast in the latest Tim Burton offering. The offbeat comedy sees Depp starring as Barnabus Collins, who was turned into a vampire in the 18th century after being cursed by a witch (Eva Green). He is accidentally freed from his coffin and finds himself in modern day. He returns to his old mansion to find his weird descendants living there, who are all hiding dark secrets. The cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and Johnny Lee Miller. I’m not 100% convinced that I will like this film. I’m mainly drawn to the fact that Depp is playing a vampire and I’m sure he will be great. However, I’m not sure that it works as a comedy. I reckon I would like it as more of a thriller. Anyway, I will happily be proven wrong once I’ve seen it.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

This comedy takes its title from the non-fiction pregnancy book of the same name and follows five couples in the Atlanta area during the pregnancy stage. There doesn’t seem to be much else in the way of plot to be honest but it’s the cast that draws me in- Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Matthew Morrison, Elizabeth Banks, Brooklyn Decker, Joe Manganiello, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford. With a cast like that, it’s got to be awesome, right? I reckon the stories will interweave like Valentine’s Day. The trailer looks pretty funny and let’s not forget about Cheryl Cole’s cameo as a talent show judge. Cannot wait to see that.

Men in Black 3

Will Smith is back as Agent J! One day, J goes into the Men in Back HQ and finds that history has been rewritten and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) no longer exists. He must go back to the 60s and work with younger Agent K (Josh Brolin) to sort the mess out. I don’t really care much for the plot to be honest, I’m just happy the franchise is making a return. As long as there are crazy aliens, crazy gadgets and lots of wise-cracks, I’m a happy customer. Nicole Scherzinger and Mickey Rourke also star.
