Golden Globes 2019: My predictions and the winners

Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, co-hosts of the 2019 Golden Globes

Tonight the 2019 awards season kicks off with the Golden Globes! As usual, here is my predictions piece ahead of the event, showing who I think will win versus who I want to win.

I should say that I have been very behind with TV this past year and so most of my TV choices will be guesses based on what I’ve heard/read. My movie selections will be much more educated predictions!

UPDATE: The winners are highlighted in bold.

Ocean’s 8: Film Review

Following the critical mauling the all-female Ghostbusters reboot got (although I personally enjoyed it), I really wanted to like Ocean’s 8, not just because of what it represented for female-led blockbusters, but because I love the ensemble cast and the idea of a female heist comedy. Sadly, it didn’t quite come through.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – Film Review

I am a huge fan of the Jurassic Park franchise, but I wasn’t thrilled about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at any point, not even feeling excited when I went to see it yesterday. I don’t usually do film reviews when I’m this behind (due to holiday) but as a fangirl, it only felt right to weigh in with my opinion.

The Boy Downstairs: Film Review

I wanted to see The Boy Downstairs at the London Film Festival but sadly my schedule didn’t allow for it, so I had to make up for that ahead of its release, and I’m glad I did because it’s a lovely little film.

McQueen: Film Review

I wasn’t interested by fashion until a few years ago so I didn’t really have much of an idea of who Alexander McQueen was before his death in 2010, so this documentary gave me a fascinating insight into the tragic life of the designer.

The Tale: Sundance London Film Review

My Friend Dahmer: Film Review

I like to go into movies knowing as little as possible about them, so I rarely watch trailers and dodge plot summaries online where I can. This generally works well for me, except with My Friend Dahmer, because I didn’t realise it was about Jeffrey Dahmer‘s early life, so I spent the whole movie waiting for his killing spree to begin and felt disappointed it wasn’t about that.

Allure: Film Review

What I love about Evan Rachel Wood is that she doesn’t take on easy roles – she takes on challenging, uncomfortable characters who do questionable things and isn’t afraid to play someone extremely damaged. This is demonstrated the most in Allure.

Deadpool 2: Film Review

Big shocker: I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Deadpool. I liked it just fine, but people started freaking out and saying how awesome it was and I just didn’t get it. That’s why I didn’t go in with the greatest expectations for the sequel – and I was right. It is, again, just fine, but not as good as the first.

On Chesil Beach: Film Review

I am a huge Saoirse Ronan fan so I will check her out in anything, but On Chesil Beach was also appealing to me because I like adaptations of Ian McEwan novels like Atonement and Enduring Love. This certainly isn’t as emotionally gruelling as Atonement, but the leads put in tremendous performances.
