Playmobil: The Movie – Film Review

Following the success of The Lego Movie and its sequels/spin-offs, it’s no surprise that other toy companies want to get in on the movie action. We now have Playmobil: The Movie, which is basically a poor man’s version of The Lego Movie.

My top ten films of 2016

civil-min

Welcome back, folks! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. Now is the time to look back over the year in film releases and pick my favourites. These are restricted to films released in the U.K. in 2016 – so it may include films I actually saw in late 2015 and although I desperately wanted to put La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion and Free Fire on this list, they aren’t out until 2017, so unfortunately they don’t make the cut.

Swiss Army Man: Film Review

swiss

I’m sure everyone has read about Swiss Army Man, how Daniel Radcliffe is playing a “farting corpse” and how some of the audience at Sundance Film Festival walked out. So I entered the screening with all these in mind and feared I would sit through a film I really hated, but it couldn’t be any further from the truth. It is probably one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever seen, sure, but it’s also really charming, funny and heartbreaking.

Top Films for September

bridget

How is it September already?! I can’t believe it’s here but there is an impressive slate of films heading your way this month, so I had to expand my usual five-six recommendations to eight and I could have even included more. There is THAT much cool stuff coming up.

Now You See Me 2: Film Review

I was a big fan of Now You See Me so I was very happy when this sequel was announced. I love Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman individually, so having them all together in a movie is the dream. So two helpings are even better – especially with the addition of more favourites Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe.

Top Films for July

july1

A new month is here and once again, here are the films I’m most excited about seeing – sadly, nothing on the list is an original idea and it’s mainly sequels or reboots/adaptations. There are a number of obvious choices I have missed off the list for legit reasons, such as Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (this was popular before my time), The Legend of Tarzan (I’ve seen it and I don’t recommend), Central Intelligence (it’s alright) and The Neon Demon (I don’t think I’ll like it).

Top Films for December

dec1

Another month, another upcoming preview! It seems most releases have done the sensible thing and steered clear of December and the super anticipated release of Stars Wars – The Force Awakens. Of the films on offer, there are some dreadful-looking comedies and the critically panned Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie outing By The Sea – so there isn’t much I want to see. Here are the picks that scrape by:

Trainwreck: Film Review

wreck1

Trainwreck has been out in the U.S. for a while now and the reviews have been great so I was expecting a lot from this Judd Apatow rom-com, written by the star Amy Schumer, and it totally delivers. The genre has died off in recent years because they get so formulaic and samey, but this is super smart, witty and totally hilarious.

Films For October

Gone Girl

I have been excited about this for a really long time and this highly anticipated adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel does not disappoint. It cannot fault it. Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, who discovers his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) is missing and he is the prime suspect. Did he do it? Check out my review here. Released: 3rd October
