Why did A Wrinkle in Time perform so poorly at the UK box office?

A Wrinkle in Time initially seemed like a surefire box office hit.

A Wrinkle in Time: Film Review

I wanted to love A Wrinkle in Time because it is a Disney movie, and I generally love all their stuff, because it is directed by Ava DuVernay, and has an incredible cast, including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, but I just came away feeling a bit meh. It was fine, I guess I liked it, but I didn’t connect with the story at all.

Wonder Woman: Film Review

I was never excited for Wonder Woman because I was fed up of superhero movies and unimpressed with the previous DC offerings. My anticipation did start to build following the release of glowing reviews and I must admit it lived up to expectation and is definitely my favourite instalment in the DC Universe so far.

My top ten films of 2016

civil-min

Welcome back, folks! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. Now is the time to look back over the year in film releases and pick my favourites. These are restricted to films released in the U.K. in 2016 – so it may include films I actually saw in late 2015 and although I desperately wanted to put La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion and Free Fire on this list, they aren’t out until 2017, so unfortunately they don’t make the cut.

Hell or High Water: Film Review

chris

Chris Pine ditches his usual fresh-faced and handsome look and heroic/likable parts to play a criminal in need of a shave, who is dirty, bloody and damn-right sweaty in Hell or High Water. It’s nice to see him prove he can do something different, including the Southern accent, although he is still outshone by Ben Foster who plays his slightly unhinged brother.

Star Trek Beyond: Film Review

beyond1

The Star Trek movies are simply not my bag and I can’t help it – I haven’t seen any of the TV series and I don’t understand the cult appeal. Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness were good but not great (to me – I know I’m in the minority) and Star Trek Beyond is exactly the same – it’s fine, I like it enough and it’s a pleasant way to spend two hours, but I wouldn’t write home about it or watch it again.

Top Films for February

feb1

It’s the start of a new month which means my usual ‘what to watch’ list. Most of January’s list was comprised of the U.K. playing catch up with releases that had been out in the U.S. for months – but in February we finally get some actual 2016 movies like Deadpool and Zoolander 2. YAAAAY! Here’s my run-down of February highlights:

Horrible Bosses 2: Film Review

boss3

This is bigger, bolder and ruder than the original – but that doesn’t make it better. While it was enjoyable and pretty funny, it was too much and totally over the top. Producers clearly went for quantity over quality when it came to the jokes.

Interstellar

I have been waiting for the release of this epic sci-fi movie for a long time and I am so ready to see this now. The plot is a closely guarded secret but we know that Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway embark on a space mission to save the human race from destructing Earth. I love everything Christopher Nolan does, I think he is a total genius, so I have very high hopes for this. Michael Caine and Jessica Chastain also star. Released: 7th November
