Departures: Film Review

I was a big fan of The Fault in Our Stars which meant Departures – also known as Then Came You – had an uphill battle to win me over. The plots are very similar so you can’t help but draw comparisons between them and Departures fails to match up.

My top 10 movies of 2017

A lot of people have been doing their end of year lists since the start of December, but I like to wait a little longer just in case there is a late entry – I thought The Greatest Showman might have made it (it didn’t) – so here are my top 10 films of 2017.

Baby Driver: Film Review

I am a huge fan of Edgar Wright‘s films but I wasn’t initially convinced about Baby Driver, I just wasn’t feeling the trailer, but I was very wrong and the movie is probably one of the few I’ve enjoyed unequivocally this year.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Film Review

div1

The issue with the Divergent franchise is that it has always been far too similar, and not as good as, The Hunger Games, which also suffered a slump in its third movie because the final book was unnecessarily split into two films – an obvious money-spinning ploy which negatively impacts the momentum and energy of the movies. The Divergent series has never been amazing, but Allegiant is a new low that won’t even please fans of the novel.

Paper Towns: Film Review

cara1

Following on from the success of John Green’s novel A Fault in Our Stars, movie studios clearly thought about the money and decided to adapt another Green book, Paper Towns. The main problem is that there is very little plot, the most interesting character is absent for the majority of the story and the ending makes the whole thing feel pointless. So of course, I’m going to take issue with these things in the film as well – and it’s not the film’s fault, it’s just based on a book that’s not so great.

Insurgent: Film Review

ins2

I have been bitching about the Divergent sequel Insurgent for ages because I was not impressed by the trailer and it seemed like a completely different film to the first one. It has a different feel and look, sure, as there is a new director (Robert Schwentke), but I liked it as much as, if it not more than, Divergent. I feel like the franchise has found its feet and this is a proper action movie.

My Top Ten Movies of 2014

?????????????????????????????????????????

2014 has been a great year for movies, but despite that, reaching my top 10 was not very hard at all. There were many films that I had such high expectations for so I couldn’t help but feel disappointed when I watched them (e.g. Interstellar), so they did not make the list. However, there were others I was dubious or not convinced about and they blew me away – so obviously, they made the cut. I’ve picked a good variety of blockbusters, indies, franchises and originals that you should do yourself a favour and see.

Men, Women & Children: LFF Film Review

men2

This film is a really interesting and relevant take on modern relationships and how they are affected by social media. It is definitely more biased towards it being bad but that’s probably because director/co-writer Jason Reitman is more aware of how things used to be before the Internet became so prolific. It is thought-provoking with a great cast.
