Top Films for January

I have just reflected on the movies I want to see throughout 2019, but now it’s time to return to my usual monthly movie preview – and here are the films I’m most excited to see this January:

Life Itself: Film Review

I love Dan Fogelman‘s TV creation, the emotional family drama This Is Us. Many people (particularly in the UK) have criticised it for being too sentimental but I love the story and characters and how moving it is. I never noticed how sappy it was watching an episode a week, but Fogelman’s love of the sentimental tearjerker was blindly obvious with Life Itself, which he wrote and directed.

Films I’m looking forward to in 2019

It’s the start of a new year so tradition dictates that I do my annual preview of films coming out across the year. There are plenty of movies I’m excited to see in 2019, but I’ve managed to chop it down to ten (I tried really hard to make sure it’s not all reboots and sequels in here but I didn’t do too well on that front).

Welcome to Marwen: Film Review

Welcome to Marwen is not doing very well critically, and although I understand where people are coming from, I also can’t deny that I really enjoyed it and was moved by it.

Taika Waititi shares details about the making of Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Bumblebee: Film Review

The Transformers franchise hasn’t exactly been held in high esteem for a while now (although I didn’t mind The Last Knight, in all honesty) but I let out a groan when Bumblebee was announced because it seemed like an obvious cash cow. Turns out, there was an interesting story to tell and it is so good it has revived my interest in the franchise.

True West: Theatre Review

I first saw Kit Harington on stage in 2016 in Doctor Faustus, which I didn’t really enjoy, but it was hard to say if that was down to the Game of Thrones star or the weird adaptation of the source material. Anyway, I decided to give him another shot when True West was announced, because it’s a play by the late Sam Shepherd and his co-star is Johnny Flynn, who was fantastic in Beast.

Mary Poppins Returns: Film Review

When Mary Poppins Returns was announced I was horrified because I thought the 1964 original shouldn’t be messed with in any way and I was worried it would ruin the legacy and my memory of the original. I desperately wanted it to be good so I’m happy to report that it is loyal and I didn’t come away disappointed.
