Top Films for August

A new month is upon us once again which means it’s time to look ahead at which cinema releases I’m looking forward to most this August.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

This looks absolutely ridiculous but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. In this Fast and Furious spin-off, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham return as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, who form an unlikely alliance when a technologically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity (the usual then). The duo had great banter in the last F&F movie so I reckon this will be very entertaining. Also starring Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. You can read my review here. Released: 1st August

Blinded by the Light

I have heard many wonderful things about this and I can’t wait to see it. Gurinder Chadha‘s latest film follows a teenager who learns to live life and find his voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen. It’s apparently very lovely, very uplifting and feel-good, so if you want something to cheer you up, this is it. Released: 9th August

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

A Quentin Tarantino movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt?! Count me in! Those names alone would have me heading for the cinema, but the plot intrigues me too. The film follows a fading TV star and his loyal stunt double/assistant in 1969, the year actress Sharon Tate and four others were brutally murdered. It features a mix of fictional characters and real, it’s very funny and very Tarantino. Review coming soon. Released: 14th August

The Informer

I’m not the biggest Joel Kinnaman fan but this crime drama could be quite interesting. He plays an undercover ex-convict who gets incarcerated to infiltrate the mob in a maximum-security prison. Sounds like high stakes stuff! Also starring Ana de Armas and Rosamund Pike. Released: 30th August

I never thought Crawl would end up on this list when I first heard about it, but apparently, it’s fantastic! I’ve been reading lots of rave reviews. Kaya Scodelario tries to save her father during a category 5 hurricane and becomes trapped in a flooding house with some alligators. Eeek! I thought this would be pure trash but I’m willing to be proven wrong. Released: 30th August

The Souvenir

I have heard many amazing things about Joanna Hogg‘s The Souvenir. The romance drama, which stars Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne, follows a young film student as she becomes romantically involved with a complex and untrustworthy man. Intrigued? You better be. Released: 30th August

Also, if you want something to entertain the kids this summer holiday, there are plenty of options too, such as Playmobil (9th), Dora and the Lost City of Gold (16th), and Uglydolls (16th).
