It’s the start of a new year so tradition dictates that I do my annual preview of films coming out across the year. There are plenty of movies I’m excited to see in 2019, but I’ve managed to chop it down to ten (I tried really hard to make sure it’s not all reboots and sequels in here but I didn’t do too well on that front).
Here are my picks, in no particular order, with their trailers (if they have one):
Us (15th March)
Jordan Peele, the man who brought us Get Out, is back with another horror, this time starring Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke as parents who take their kids on holiday and encounter their evil doppelgangers. If I made this list before Christmas, I probably wouldn’t have included it, but the trailer changed everything. Make sure you give it a watch:
Zombieland 2 (11th October)
When this was announced I went absolutely nuts because I love, love, love the first one – it was genius and so, so funny. It makes me so happy that the original crew of Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin are returning and they are being joined by the amazing Zoey Deutch. Why do we have to wait until October though?!
Star Wars: Episode IX (19th December)
Star Wars is an obvious choice. The plot is unknown at this point but J.J. Abrams is back in the director’s chair so I’m feeling confident. The likes of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac are back for more and I can’t wait!
Avengers: Endgame (26th April)
This is a no-brainer. This is what the MCU has been building up to for the past 10 years so of course I’m crazy excited to see how it all ends. I’m kinda sad too. My expectations are already sky high for this.
It: Chapter 2 (6th September)
I was surprised by how much I liked the reboot of It back in 2017. It was so good, I gave it 5/5! Chapter 2 features a whole new cast as the grown-up versions of the kids in the first chapter. Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader return to home to Derry to face Pennywise once again.
Joker (4th October)
When this was announced, I gave a groan as I didn’t think we really needed another movie portrayal of the Joker following Heath Ledger‘s Oscar winning turn in The Dark Knight. But Joaquin Phoenix is pretty perfect for the part and pap photos from set have made me very interested. The Joker is a comic book character I love and this is an origins story so I’m looking forward to it.
The Lion King (19th July)
Again, another no-brainer. I even wrote a reaction post to the trailer because I had so much to say about it. I was worried when this was first announced but the trailer reassured me that it will be a faithful, maybe even a shot-for-shot, retelling of the original which is one of my favourite films ever. It looks beautiful, the CGI is stunning and the voice cast is insane, including the likes of Donald Glover, Beyonce and James freaking Earl Jones.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (26th July)
I get excited for everything Quentin Tarantino makes, even though I never love them as much as Kill Bill (which I have seen many many times). But this film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, which is one amazing line-up. It’s about the Manson Family and the brutal murder of actress Sharon Tate so I reckon it’s gonna be pretty bloody.
Frozen 2 (22nd November)
I’m hyped for Frozen 2, so sue me. The first one is brilliant, I don’t care what anyone says, and the fact that Disney have taken their time and got the original cast back together rather than rush out a follow-up makes me confident that it will be good. I have so much Disney on this list.
Rocketman (24th May)
I’m a big, big Taron Egerton fan plus I like a lot of Elton John‘s music and I love a celeb biopic so this ticks a lot of boxes for me. An early picture (above) showed Taron looking impressively like Elton and I’m excited to see him in the flamboyant costumes and showing off his beautiful singing voice.
Honourable mentions:
Isn’t It Romantic – 15th February
The Rhythm Section – 22nd February
Captain Marvel – 8th March
Dumbo – 29th March
Men in Black International – 14th June
Toy Story 4 – 21st June
Spider-Man: Far From Home – 5th July
The Woman in the Window – 27th September
Charlie’s Angels – 25th October
This post just showed me how insanely fun 2019 will be for movies! I cannot wait 😀
