Top Films for December

It’s the start of December which means it’s time for the next movie preview! Here is my top selection for movies coming out in the UK across December.

The Disaster Artist

This is an absolute must. It is so funny and has so much heart and it features one of James Franco‘s best performances in years. He plays Tommy Wiseau, who made The Room, also known as one of the worst movies ever made. The film follows his friendship with Greg Sestero (Dave Franco), their move to LA, lack of success in Hollywood and the troubled production behind the movie they made in 2003. Seeing The Room first helps but it isn’t essential. Thoroughly enjoyable. You can read my review here. Released: 1st December in some cinemas, 6th December nationwide

Another glorious film to kick off the month. Wonder is a delight and such a heart warmer. Jacob Tremblay is Auggie Pullman, who has a genetic disorder so he was born with a deformed face. The film follows him, his sister Via (Izabela Vidovic), mum Isabel (Julia Roberts) and dad Nate (Owen Wilson) in the months following Auggie’s first day at a regular school. My review can be read here. Released: 1st December

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Well this is a no brainer! Obviously I’m excited to see the next Star Wars instalment. As usual, not much is known about it but it looks like it will focus more on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver return and it will mark the last onscreen appearance of Carrie Fisher (RIP). Released: 14th December

Jake Gyllenhaal puts in another class performance in his portrayal of Jeff Bauman, who lost both his legs in the Boston marathon bombing. It doesn’t do anything more than the usual ‘triumph over adversity’ films but it is worth a watch for Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany‘s performances. Released: 8th December

The Greatest Showman

I don’t know a great deal about this but I’m sold on the fact that it’s a) a musical b) stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya and c) is about the circus. That ticks all the boxes! I haven’t seen any of the trailers or listened to any of the songs because I want to be surprised. Very confident I’ll love this. Released: 26th December

Pitch Perfect 3

Another obvious choice but one I’m very excited about. I didn’t think there was much need for another instalment but since they made one anyway, I can’t resist! The usuals – Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson – are back and this time they are competing to perform on a USO tour. Released: 20th December
