So The Walking Dead has been plodding along at a deathly pace, getting everything in line for last tonight’s ‘explosive’ finale so after weeks of build up and filler, I was expecting something epic so I was seriously disappointed.
You can read the episode recap here and beware: spoilers lay ahead.
Usually in season finales, someone dies and that is generally a surprise or at least not as obvious as Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green). Not only had I expected her to die two episodes before when she foolishly went into the Saviours home alone, it was also clear Martin-Green was off given her new role in the Star Trek TV series. The way she went out was kinda cool, but would have been better if she had actually killed/injured Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) or been given a moment of glory but beyond chowing down on some random Saviour. We didn’t even see her die onscreen! WTF!
What made it even worse was all these flashbacks or dream sequences with Sasha and/or Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) or Maggie (Lauren Cohan) that must have been an attempt to make her demise sadder but it was just frustrating because it kept getting in the way of the main action and felt like more of a time wasting exercise!
So I was kinda expecting somebody else would die in a shocking way. For a moment, I feared it would be Michonne (Danai Gurira), then Carl (Chandler Riggs) and I’m always hoping Eugene (Josh McDermitt) will bite the dust cos he is annoying as hell and overstayed his welcome a long time ago.
I did like how the Scavengers turned on the Alexandria crew, that was unexpected and made me like ‘oh hell no!’, how the Hilltop and Sanctuary lots came to the rescue in the nick of time and how the tiger absolutely stole the show. It does suck that they didn’t win the war against Negan though – that was the whole point of this series, no?! That’s what we’ve been leading up to! So it’s a case of they’ve won the battle, not the war, and we’ve got more of this to come.
One thing is for sure, they need to step it up and do something about all this filler and crazy slow pace because it’s infuriating as hell.
