My top ten: Films I’m excited for in 2017

guardians

We are rapidly approaching 2017 so it seems like the right moment to look ahead at what movies we can be excited about this coming year.

I have deliberately not included 2017 releases I have already seen because that means I’m not excited about them any more. For example, Hacksaw Ridge would have definitely made the list if I hadn’t seen it already.

I had to be quite selective to get it down to just ten and I had to be honest and cut out the big-name movies which I’m actually not that excited about – which is why you will notice there is no Wonder Woman, Fifty Shades Darker, The Fate of the Furious, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Pitch Perfect 3 on here. Thor: Ragnorak almost made the cut but it got ousted by releases that are more important to me.

So here’s my top ten, in no particular order:

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Everyone knows how much I LOVED Kingsman: The Secret Service and Taron Egerton and Colin Firth are back and it’s essentially more of the same but on a more international scale as the English Kingsman team up with American counterparts Statesman. The new cast is so impressive too with additions such as Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges. Expected: October

Beauty and the Beast

I wasn’t sure about a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast because I love the animation so much but the trailer has won me over. Emma Watson seems like the perfect casting choice for Belle and as long as it remains faithful to the original, I’ll be happy. Expected: March

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge surprise in 2014 – I really thought it was going to be crap. Now the expectations are much higher and I’ll be impressed if it can deliver the goods again. Chris Pratt returns as Peter Quill who is hunting for answers about his true parentage with the help of Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista and most importantly, Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Expected: May

Star Wars: Episode VIII

This is a no brainer. I loved The Force Awakens so obviously I want to see what comes next for Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) etc. This is also going to be Carrie Fisher‘s last film (sob). Expected: December

Alien: Covenant

Prometheus may not have won everyone over but I have seen it three times and I love it. The Alien franchise in general is awesome and this is apparently supposed to tie all the films together, according to director Ridley Scott. It kinda follows the same plot as Prometheus  – a crew lands on a remote planet and discover dangerous creatures. Michael Fassbender is back as droid David but the rest are new additions such as Katherine Waterston, James Franco and Billy Crudup. Expected: May

Blade Runner 2049

I am not as hyped about the Blade Runner sequel as some people might be but I’m really intrigued to see what director Denis Villeneuve does with it, given the 30+ years gap between movies. Harrison Ford returns as blade runner Rick Deckard, who has been missing for 30 years. Ryan Gosling plays a new blade runner who unearths a powerful secret. Expected: October

The Circle

I loved the Dave Eggers book so I have been excited for this adaptation for some time. If it is not as epic as the book, I will be hugely disappointed! Emma Watson stars as Mae, who joins Google-like tech company The Circle, ran by Tom Hanks, but the job expects a lot from their employees, with devastating consequences. Expected: April

Spider-Man: Homecoming

I loved Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man movies so it does make me feel like a traitor to be excited for Tom Holland‘s first Spidey movie but I loved his appearance in Captain America: Civil War and am confident he will be excellent as the webslinger. The fact that Robert Downey, Jr. appears in this is the icing on the cake. Expected: July

Dunkirk

Well, duh, it’s a Christopher Nolan movie so obviously. Dunkirk tells the emotional, powerful true story of the evacuation of allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during WWII. It is going to be brutal and I imagine I’m going to cry but I can’t wait to see how he handles it. Oh and did I mention One Direction’s Harry Styles makes his movie acting debut?! Expected: July

Kong: Skull Island

I wasn’t THAT excited by the movie announcement but I have been swayed by the trailers and the fact I love Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston, who lead this action adventure about the origins of legendary movie beast Kong. Expected: March

Whats films are you looking forward to the most in 2017?
