The MTV VMAs were incredibly underwhelming

The Video Music Awards are the awards show I look forward to the most because it is usually fun, packed with celebs having a good time and present some shocking or ridiculous behaviour. I caught up with the show last night and tbh, I was so bored and tired I almost stopped watching. When did the VMAs become so average and underwhelming?

This year just posed no real shocks – everything from the winners to performances were expected and even Drake‘s headline-grabbing speech about Rihanna wasn’t as exciting as reports made it seem. He said he was in love with her but not necessarily in that sense and although they’ve blatantly hooked up, he didn’t definitively say they were a couple. Their kiss at the end was the most awkward as Rihanna was obviously not that into it.

Britney Spears, who has some of the most memorable performances in VMA history, returned to that stage after almost 10 years and just didn’t bring it. Yes, she can dance and she has a banging bod, we all know that, but the song is bland and boring, her sheer jumpsuit was garish and her sexual moves with G-Eazy made me cringe. She grabbed his crotch and tried to get all up close and steamy but it just made me uncomfortable. It was a fine performance but so boring in comparison to her Slave 4 U one or her iconic lip lock with Madonna.

Rihanna, the Video Vanguard recipient, performed four times which was quite excessive. I love her and her music but she can’t sing her dancey tracks live so she just sings minimal parts and dances to the backing track. However, I loved her dance hall one and she sang amazing at the finale. Her speech was also interesting to watch so well done Rihanna for breathing some life into proceedings.

Beyonce was obviously amazing and she stuck to Lemonade tracks most people know but it was a long-ass performance but I like the political statement. It was flawless, as to be expected, which made it slightly boring because she is always this good! Her speeches were short and sweet and she was as poised and professional as ever.

As much as Kanye West is a dick, his speech and music video were probably the most entertaining of the night because you had no idea what was going to happen. He could have said anything and he referenced his drama with Taylor Swift and his previous VMAs speech interruption. Him shouting out his ex Amber Rose and telling his wife Kim Kardashian she’s a “G” for letting him do it was my favourite moment probs. The Fade video was equally fascinating and its ending was frankly bizarre.

I also want to give a shout out to Alicia Keys for singing a beautiful a capella song about equality and Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj for an interesting and captivating performance of their collab Side to Side.

In general, the VMAs suffered badly from not having a host and relying on comedians placed around Madison Square Garden. Americans might love these people but I didn’t find Key & Peele or Jay Pharaoh remotely funny, but maybe that’s cos I’m British. They were just wasting time spouting crap when we could be getting down to business. There also weren’t many televised awards or celebs there to actually accept them which was a let down.

I really hope it picks up again next year.
