Why has Nashville been cancelled?

A lot of U.S. network shows have been cancelled this week, but I didn’t expect Nashville to be one of them. Sure, I don’t think the storylines have been as strong as they once were, but the viewing figures are still great (4-6 million weekly) and I’m still invested in these characters. WHYYY?!

I have watched Nashville from the beginning so some of these characters mean a lot to me – especially Avery (Jonathan Jackson), Gunnar (Sam Palladio) and Scarlett (Clare Bowen). But the show has been declining a bit in the story line stakes. I used to make sure I caught the next episode straight away but now I’m not fussed that I’m two episodes behind (I’ll catch up before the end obviously). Problem is: not much has really happened this season. Sure, we’ve had Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon (Charles Esten) getting married, his health issues and Beverley’s death, Jeff Fordham (Oliver Hudson)’s shocking roof fall, and all the Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) rehab stuff, but that was all at the start. Not much has really happened since, in the grand scheme of things – just a lot of will-they-won’t they love stuff and Maddie (Lennon Stella)’s annoying tantrums.

But I’m still shocked – it is a popular show after all, and I thought ratings were what the network based their renewals and cancellations on. Obviously not. Perhaps it is connected to Panettiere’s absence to treat postpartum depression? She was missing from some episodes and she announced yesterday she would be needing more help. It’s a big ensemble cast though, so I doubt this.

I must admit that I’m not gutted. Surprised, yes, but not devastated. I’m fine with it. I have started to care less about it and I would rather it go out on a high(ish) note than a stinker. But as the news comes just two weeks before the season finale, so I am concerned about the ending. I hate shows that just end forever on a cliffhanger or unfinished business when you have been watching for years. There probably won’t be a resolution here because the cancellation wasn’t expected and that’s not fair – I want proper closure!
