Star Wars: The Force Awakens press conference – Pics & round-up

Today I felt like the luckiest person ever because I managed to get an invite to the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens press conference in London. I love the films, I am huge fan of the cast (in other things as well) and it was such an enjoyable experience.

The event was being livestreamed so we were banned from taking pictures of the cast during the actual conference, but I managed to rush some cheeky shots on my phone as the cast were filing in. In the above picture (sorry about the quality), you can see (L-R) Gwendoline Christie, Carrie Fisher, J.J. Abrams, Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan.

John Boyega‘s name card was on the panel but it was stealthy removed before the event started (15 minutes late). I thought perhaps he had made himself ill drinking after last night’s premiere, but he casually bowled up halfway into the conference, plonked down next to the moderator and said, “Apologies guys, I overslept!”

Fisher was the funniest cast member besides Boyega. As I have seen from previous interviews, she has no filter and just doesn’t think about what she says. She interrupts things, chips in whenever she feels like it and is always cracking a joke, so you never know if a story is true. She constantly made me laugh and her spirit really helped perk up the other cast members, who seemed very reluctant to speak at the beginning.

My favourites jokes from Fisher were that she went “through the crew like wildfire” while shooting the originals, she cannot remember the wrap party, that there is a strain of marijuana named after Princess Leia and that she wants to do a trailer reaction video like Ridley and Boyega. I hope she follows through on this! Naturally, her dog Gary was in attendance too.

We were not allowed to ask about spoiler plot points, which is fair enough, but it meant that a lot of questions felt familiar because it is quite limiting. On the topic of spoilers, Abrams said it was disappointing that people couldn’t help going online and ruining it for others only 12 hours after its release but he hopes people can still enjoy it knowing key plot points beforehand.

Daisy seemed the brightest and most awake, which is impressive considering she has taken on A LOT of the press for this. Her energy was amazing. I was equally enamoured with Fisher and Boyega for their humor, Abrams for his sheer genius and articulate responses, Ford for simply being Ford (he talks so slowly though!) and Driver for speaking more than I expected him to.

When they failed to chat much in the very beginning, I was worried it was going to be dull and disappointing but I couldn’t have been more wrong. This was so much fun, thanks to Fisher’s jokes and John’s late arrival, and I am so delighted I was there to witness it.
