Top Films for December

Another month, another upcoming preview! It seems most releases have done the sensible thing and steered clear of December and the super anticipated release of Stars Wars – The Force Awakens. Of the films on offer, there are some dreadful-looking comedies and the critically panned Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie outing By The Sea – so there isn’t much I want to see. Here are the picks that scrape by:

Victor Frankenstein

I am not totally sold on this and I would have no interest if it didn’t star James McAvoy as the crazy scientist Victor Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe as his surgeon assistant Igor. This is basically about their crazy experiments about creating life from death, which lead to the famous Monster, and their time on the run from authorities. Released: 3rd December

I am a big fan of the horror comedy and festive films, and this combines them all. The Krampus is a creature from folklore (never heard of it myself) which is accidentally summoned to a house at Christmas. This will either be fantastic or god awful – I haven’t decided. Starring Toni Collette and Adam Scott. Released: 4th December

The Night Before

Another Christmas comedy – but I have seen this one already and I approve (review here). Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie are old high school friends doing their traditional Christmas party for one last time as they realise they have been doing it for too long and need to grow up. Chaos ensues as they desperately want to have a good send-off. Released: 4th December

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler back together – need I say more?! They throw one last party at their childhood home before their parents sell it. It is a pretty weak premise but I love everything these two do so I reckon this will be smart, funny and a total riot. Released: 18th December

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

I don’t think I really need to say anything! I have been hyped for a really long time about this – I’m not a massive Star Wars nerd but the original films are good and I’m looking forward to seeing how the story continues and how new characters like Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) fit with the oldies like Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Released: 17th December

In the Heart of the Sea

Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy star in this high seas adventure about a crew’s fight for survival after being shipwrecked following an attack by giant sperm whale. This is inspired by Moby Dick, which was based on the real 1820 story. It looks epic. Released 26th December
