Jason Bateman slates Horrible Bosses 2

One of the my favourite things is when actor owns up to being in a crap film. Obviously during the press tour, they cannot openly admit they hate it but most continue to put a positive spin/angle on all their projects for years, regardless of how well they were received by critics or their box office performance. Jason Bateman on the other hand has rightly admitted a Horrible Bosses sequel was a bad idea, and this makes me very happy.

Bateman, who I think is bloody brilliant, told Marc Maron on his WTF podcast, “The first one was funny. The first one put up some money. The second one was garbage as far as box office goes… Who knows if it was on the merits or when they released it, but it did not do any money.”

He called the movie a “paycheque for everyone” (ouch!) and warned the general public, “Don’t go out and buy a bunch of tickets for the first one unless you want a second one, because we don’t have any discipline in this town… A lot of people saw the first one, but there are plenty of films that made a lot of money where no one is interested in seeing another one.”

This is further proof in my age-old mantra: just because it makes financial sense to make a sequel, doesn’t mean you should. I didn’t find Horrible Bosses 2 that bad (you can read my review here) but it was a blatant cash grab and the plot did not hold up enough to sustain the movie so it just kinda relied upon the stars (including Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day and Jennifer Aniston) using their comedy talents to jazz it up.

What I love about Jason’s wording is that he is still being cautious. He doesn’t actually say HE thought the film was shit – just that it did bad at the box office, suggesting a sequel was not wanted. I would have loved for him to be brutally honest with his thoughts. But still, it’s still refreshing to have an actor speaking negatively about their films in any way – especially when they were released within the past year!

More of this please!

Hi Julie, thanks for the comment! I enjoyed it but the first one was definitely better. I can’t remember them that well though – I have no idea what train scene you mean! 🙂
