Can Zayn Malik sustain a solo career?

So last night, Zayn Malik announced the not-so-shocking news that he is launching a solo career with RCA Records. A label switch from One Direction‘s Syco Music had been long-rumoured and demos had been released but now it’s official, I can’t help but wonder, does he have what it takes to be a successful solo star?

Zayn has an amazing voice, one of my favourites of the group, so I think he will do pretty well on that. Also die-hard One Direction fans will probably support him, at least in the beginning, out of loyalty. However, if you take the singing talent anyway, Malik seems to lack the drive and the enthusiasm for the pop star life. As I said when he quit the band in March (see piece here), he always seems the least bothered by the lifestyle, the least hard-working and the most reluctant to be famous. So him going for a solo career is still pretty surprising.

But his lack of enthusiasm could be explained by his tweet last night: “I guess I never explained why I left , it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who i really am! #realmusic #RCA !!” Which is his way of basically saying he didn’t leave to be a “normal” teenager, which I totally bought due to his attitude, but in fact he was fed up with One Direction’s songs and wanted to do his own. Ouch!

I’m really not sure about this solo career. He seems so troubled and unable to handle the limelight. I have high hopes for his songs as I love his voice but I’ll be amazed if he lasts on his own. I don’t know how he will cope without the boys as a buffer. I really hope he proves me wrong.
