Everything you need to know about The Revenant

The first teaser thriller for western thriller The Revenant dropped today and it looks amazing. It is something I have heard loads about and I cannot wait for it as it stars some of my favourite actors – Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson. But I did notice that for all its beautiful scenery and cinematography, the trailer didn’t really tell us much, so read on for more info on this must-watch film.

– It is set in the 19th Century and based on a true story about Hugo Glass (DiCaprio), a fur trapper who is mauled by a bear while out hunting. Two men assigned to look after him (Hardy and Will Poulter) rob him and leave him to die, but he survives and embarks on a journey of revenge. Classic.

– This is director Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s first job since he won the Oscar for Birdman, and this looks just as technically ambitious

– He wanted to film using natural light, use the correct weather (e.g. film snow scenes when it’s snowing) on location in Canada and film chronologically. He ended up not being able to shoot in chronological order as the weather got warmer when they needed winter scenes. Using natural light and weather also meant the shoot took much longer than originally planned and overran by 2-3 months, meaning Hardy had to drop out of Suicide Squad

– It is adapted from Michael Punke’s 2003 semi-fictional novel of the same name

– The film has been in development since 2001, with both Samuel L. Jackson and Christian Bale attached as leads, but both eventually dropped out. Inarritu came on in 2011 as director (he also co-wrote), but it didn’t start shooting until 2014. It’s been a long time coming!

Gleeson told Interview magazine that the shoot “was insane” and Inarritu “just put us through the shit. But it looks beautiful, and that ended up being a beautiful experience.”

– Hardy was sent the script for his part by DiCaprio, who had worked with him on Inception. He explains to Esquire magazine:

“I shamelessly don’t read scripts… But Leo called me up and said, ‘Dude, you have to check this out, I think it’s a brilliant piece and Alejandro’s a genius – will you read it?’ I was supposed to be doing Splinter Cell, so I was like, ‘I’m going to jump out of helicopters, mate. I want to go and play soldiers!’ and he said, ‘Just read it, you idiot!’ I was like ‘Mmm, all right’.”

The rest is history, as they say. Now you have all the facts, sit back, relax and enjoy the tense and beautifully shot scenes in this teaser trailer. The Revenant is set for release in January 2016.
