Another promo was released this week for Heroes Reborn and I have to say, I’m so unsure about watching it. I was a big fan of the original show when it first began and quit it halfway through its run because it just lost its way and I don’t see how this can recapture the magic, especially with new characters.
The official synopsis from NBC reads: “From original creator Tim Kring, the supernatural phenomenon begins again with a fresh crop of inspiring heroes who take on the ultimate struggle between those with extraordinary abilities and those with nefarious motives to hunt and harness their powers. Epic adventures await these newly empowered allies as they cross paths with some of the original characters, unlocking the mysterious fate of the universe and their place within it.”
So it is essentially the same show?! I think the only viewers who will accept this will be those who didn’t watch the TV series – because the most beloved characters are gone, such as Claire (Hayden Panettiere), Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Niki (Ali Larter). Why would we care about watching the same series again? I certainly got the impression Heroes had outstayed its welcome by the time it ended in 2010.
Heroes Reborn is a miniseries beginning in September, which I imagine will turn into a full-blown show if the ratings are good. I just looked at the trailer thinking ‘I’ve seen this all before’. They are only so many superhuman abilities and limited amount of things that can be done, so I’m sure Heroes would have covered that already. Also, Heroes came out in a time when we weren’t oversaturated with superhero movies and TV series – it was fresh, it was exciting and it had a unique place in the market. There are so many programs like that nowadays, I don’t see how it will stand out.
The only familiar face joining in a regular capacity is Jack Coleman, who played Noah Bennett, while my fav Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey) and The Haitian (Jimmy Jean Louis) also return for recurring appearances. The only new people I recognise is Zachary Levi (picture top) and Ryan Guzman.
