15 Films to Watch in 2015

15a

There are so many amazing films coming up in 2015 and I could have written an extremely long list but since its going to be 2015, I decided to pick my top 15 movies that I cannot wait to see in the new year. Here we go:

Ex_Machina

Domhnall Gleeson plays a coder who heads to a remote location to help inventor Oscar Isaac test the artificial intelligence capabilities of robot Ava (played by Alicia Vikander). I bought a ticket to a BFI advance preview and it is fantastic. It is so intense and you don’t know who is playing whom until the very end.

Fifty Shades of Grey

I’m not even ashamed to put this in – there is so much hype surrounding this film that of course I’m going to check it out. Dakota Johnson stars as Anastasia Steele, a university student who enters into a dominant/submissive sexual relationship with businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) in this big-screen adaptation of E.L. James’ bestseller. Apparently it won’t be as kinky as the book but I’m sure that won’t deter anybody.

Furious 7

I have to say I’m getting a little tired of the Fast and Furious franchise although I find it enjoyable. This time around I’m will be seeing it more to see how they coped with the death of Paul Walker. He died before the shoot was over and his brothers filled in the rest. This time around Jason Statham (who popped up at the end of 6) has a vendetta against Dom (Vin Diesel) so their crews will fight it out.

Insurgent

This is the second film in the Divergent series starring Shailene Woodley as Tris, who does not conform to the personality types the dystopian society tries to enforce on its residents. This time around she is forming an alliance to take over the bad rulers of their world. The reception to the first Divergent was not great but, judging from the trailer, tons more money has been ploughed into this to make it more of an action flick, so hopefully it does the trick.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

I LOVED the Avengers movie so I am psyched for this follow-up. The usual superheroes – Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor and Hawkeye – go up against artificial intelligence Ultron, after Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) attempts to jumpstart an old peacekeeping program with him and it backfires. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen join the cast as twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

Dark Places

Charlize Theron stars as Libby Day in the murder mystery thriller adapted from the novel by Gillian Flynn (the author of Gone Girl). Libby survived the brutal killing of her family as a child and testified against her brother Ben, but a secret society forces her to question the facts. Did she see Ben murder her family? If he didn’t, who did? I’ve read the book and it is full of suspense.

15d

Tomorrowland

Not an awful lot is known about the specifics of Tomorrowland except it stars George Clooney and Britt Robertson who head to a place somewhere in time and space where their actions affect the world. This looks like a quality Disney live-action sci-fi!

Pan

I love the Peter Pan story so I am totally up for this all-star cast reboot. Hugh Jackman stars as Captain Blackbeard alongside Garrett Hedlund, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara.

15e

Jurassic World

This is at the very, very top of my list. I LOVE the Jurassic Park franchise and have watched it many times, so if this isn’t top quality than I will be upset. Set 22 years after the events of the original, a fully-functional dinosaur theme park operates on Isla Nublar. Geneticists try to increase visitors to the park by creating a hybrid dinosaur but their experiment backfires when the uber-dino escapes into the park. Then it’s up to Chris Pratt to save the day.

SPECTRE

I’m not a super Bond fan but I loved Skyfall so I’m excited to see what they come up with next. This is reportedly Daniel Craig’s last outing as the superspy so hopefully he will go out with a bang. The plot is kept firmly under wraps, but the title hints that it will revisit old ground with the SPECTRE organisation and villain Blofeld. New cast members include Lea Seydoux, Christoph Waltz and Monica Bellucci.

15f

Pitch Perfect 2

This is gunna be SO.DAMN.GOOD! This is essentially the same film in that the Barden Bellas compete in an acapella competition but I don’t even care because I love the first movie (and Anna Kendrick). This time around the girls enter into an international singing tournament. I CANNOT WAIT!! Elizabeth Banks also makes her feature film directorial debut.

Magic Mike XXL

Channing Tatum returns as the male stripper Mike in this highly-anticipated sequel. I don’t think anyone expected the first film to do as well as it did and I surprised by how much I liked it (I have now seen it 3 times) so of course I am ready for this. Mike and his strippers buddies (except Alex Pettyfer, who didn’t return for this) go on a road trip to a stripping convention and that’s all we know so far. But who cares?! It will be awesome.

15g

Crimson Peak

I don’t really watch horror movies these days but I will have to see this because of the stellar casting. Mia Wasikowska stars as a author who lives in a creepy, crumbling mansion with her husband (Tom Hiddleston) who is not who he appears to be. Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain co-star.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part II

The hit franchise will finally come to its conclusion with this action-packed finale. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) will take on President Snow and the Capitol in an attempt to overthrow the Government and change the way Panem is ruled. But will it all go to plan? I cannot wait.

15h

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

I love Star Wars so naturally I’m bummed that the release is still a year away. Why isn’t it out now already?! Obviously the plot is kept seriously under wraps but I like that. Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Adam Driver have scored roles in the sci-fi with old favourites Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher return.
