Why celebrity lifestyle sites are just a bad idea

Celebrities should not create lifestyle websites. Full stop. It is not a good idea. It just makes people dislike them. The most famous example is Gwyneth Paltrow and GOOP, which just emphasised how out-of-touch with the real world she actually is and just alienated her from us even further. A number of her posts were subject to ridicule due to the cost of items recommended, the expense or rarity of ingredients used in recipes and annoying tips.

Now Blake Lively has got in on the game. Her lifestyle blog is called Preserve, which is almost as annoying as Goop. But to be fair to Paltrow, she had a career for a long time before she embarked on her venture, whereas Blake is pretty young and hasn’t been in THAT much besides Gossip Girl.

Anyway, Preserve launched today and I feel like Blake is already the butt of the joke for her editor’s letter, which was too pretentious and trying to be “down with the common people”. She attempts to joke and appear down to earth but it backfires and just reads awkwardly. It shows how out of touch she is and the only people who will use this site seriously are those who can afford $110 apron or $450 crystal bowl.

Blake says in her letter, “I’m no editor, no artisan, no expert. And certainly no arbiter of what you should buy, wear, or eat.” But is that not the point of the site?! Why did you create it then?! Although her introductory note gives details about her venture in a superfluous manner, I’m still not really sure what it is. It seems to have a bit of everything relating to lifestyle.

Also, I think the issue us regular Joes have with these sites is that they are trying to tell us how to live, pretty much. They are giving us tips, cooking recipes and product recommendations for things that are irrelevant to our lives. They are selling an unattainable lifestyle. Even though Blake says she is not an expert on these things, surely producing such a site inherently makes it seems you think you are. It all seems bit preachy and very out of touch with the real world.

Hence why I will not be using these sites unless I need a good laugh!
