Reese Witherspoon apologises in post-arrest interview

Reese Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct on April 19th for being rude and obnoxious to a police officer who was arresting her husband, Jim Toth, for driving under the influence.

She released a public apology the following day but hasn’t spoken to the press until now. Unfortunately for Reese, she has a film to promote, Mud, and she is obligated to speak to the press. Fortunately for us, we get to hear all the details while they are still fresh!

She appeared on Good Morning America today and it was clear that the interviewer didn’t want to talk about Mud. I’m sure Reese expected it too and she probably wanted this opportunity to set the record straight and apologise again. She boiled their actions down to “bad judgement”, a sentiment which she repeats.

Reese explains the situation: “I saw [the cop] arresting my husband and I literally panicked. I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said all kinds of crazy things. I have no idea what I was talking about.” So she doesn’t know if she said “don’t you know who I am?” then!

“We went out to dinner in Atlanta and we had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. It was just completely unacceptable. We’re so sorry and embarrassed. We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”

At least she is taking responsibility for what she did and isn’t trying to make excuses for her behaviour. She even admits that she was rude to the police officer.

She confessed: “I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”

I appreciate what Reese has done here. She didn’t ignore it and she openly talked about it rather than her movie. She knows it was a mistake, she is obviously embarrassed about and I can’t imagine her doing anything like this again. Hopefully this hasn’t done too much damage to her career and/or reputation.
