MTV Movie Awards nominations

It is nice to see this year that a lot of serious Oscar-contenders are being thrown into the not-so-serious MTV awards mix.

The awards are fun, tongue-in-cheek and generally just a celebration of movies. The movies that the average Joe see, not the serious Oscar folk. Which is why I was surprised to see mentions for Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Zero Dark Thirty and Argo because they don’t target the general movie-going public.

The biggest shocker this year is how little Twilight has been nominated. The franchise has stolen the show for the past four years and claimed most of the trophies, yet, this year, only Taylor Lautner has been nominated and that was simply for “best shirtless performance”- in other words, for looking hot. I do find it odd as I was hoping this would be the year in which Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart would finally kiss onstage for the Best Kiss award and they haven’t even been nominated this year, which means chances of that are totally scuppered. They had been teasing us with a nearly-kiss for four years and now it was Twilight’s final year, I thought they would reward the fans! That’s why I’m so surprised it didn’t pick up more- it was the last in the franchise!

I’m not a big lover of Twilight and frankly, those two give super awkward on-stage speeches but it is the main example in making my point that the awards have changed. They’ve just become more diverse. There still some crazy categories like “Best Scared as Shit Performance” and “Shirtless Performance”. The latter is a new category for this year, along with “Best Musical Moment” and I doubt the ceremony itself will change much, considering it is being hosted by comedy actress Rebel Wilson.

Django Unchained and Ted lead the way with seven noms apiece and Silver Linings Playbook comes a close third with six. Franchises usually do well here so it is no surprise that Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers have done pretty well. Will Ferrell will also be given a Comedic Genius Award.

The show will on April 14th and be broadcast live in the US from the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City. I’m also a little excited because I think the movie spoof segments are making a comeback yaaay!
